Hervé Panetto, élu président de l'IFAC France NMO. A lire dans Factuel

The field of automation has a long tradition in France. IFAC was founded in Paris in 1957 and since then 115 events have been organized in France, including the 1972 IFAC World Congress in Paris and the 2017 IFAC World Congress in Toulouse. Many French personalities have served IFAC in various positions, including two presidents : Victor Broida (1969-1972) and Janan Zaytoon (2014-2017).

The French NMO (National Member Organisation) was AFRA until 1968, then AFCET (French Association for Economic and Technical Cybernetics) until 1998. From 1999 to 2019, the Société de l'électricité et de l'électronique (SEE) became the French NMO and IFAC's activities in France were coordinated by GDR MACS (Groupe de recherche national du CNRS en Modélisation, automatique et commande des systèmes).

The Société d'automatique, de génie industriel et de productique (SAGIP) became the French NMO in January 2020. SAGIP is a representative body of the French automation and industrial engineering community, with more than 2,000 members. Its aim is to promote scientific and organizational activities of interest for research and education in automation, industrial and production engineering in France.

SAGIP is structured in 3 chapters. The French chapter, IFAC France NMO, is chaired by Hervé Panetto, President of IFAC Coordination Committee 5, Professor at CRAN (UMR 7039 / CNRS-University of Lorraine) and co-chaired by Thierry Marie Guerra, President of IFAC Technical Committee 3.2, Professor at the Polytechnic University of Hauts-de-France (LAMIH CNRS UMR 8201).
