SUMMARY:Séminaire de Emilija Plorina
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Emilija PLORINA\, Biophotonics laboratory\, Institute
of Atomic Physics and Spectroscopy\, University of Latvia\nTitle: Optical
and Speckle Imaging Approaches for Biomedical Diagnostics\nDate: Tuesday A
 pril 22nd 2025 - 1:00 pm - Room ED38\, Building E\, Faculty of Medicine\,
Brabois-Santé Campus\n\nAbstract: At the Institute of Atomic Physics and
Spectroscopy of University of Latvia multiple optical technologies are bei
ng developed for biomedical applications. One such area is assessment of c
utaneous manifestations in patients with rare diseases\, which are disease
s that affect less than 1 in 2000 individuals. There are various rare dise
ases that are systematic multi-organ diseases that can remain undiagnosed
for many years but may have symptoms appearing on the skin\, at early stag
es easily mistaken for more common skin diseases. In our studies we have l
ooked at angiokeratomas caused by Fabry disease\, café-au-lait macules an
d neurofibromas caused by Neurofibromatosis Type 1\, lesions caused by Lep
rosy and others using multispectral imaging and spectroscopy. Another area
of research in our institute is laser speckle imaging of microbial growth
. Laser speckles are an interference pattern that forms when a laser beam
scatters off different parts of an uneven surface. This property allows im
aging the movement of very small objects such as bacteria and fungi. In ou
r studies we have experimented with bacteria such as Pleurotus ostreatus\,
Escherichia coli and others. We hope to achieve near-real-time monitoring
of bacterial growth using this technology.\n\nAlso available on Teams.\n\
