4D Modeling for Asset Management in AEC

Project description:
Over 50 years of use and life, the cost of operating, maintaining and redeveloping an architectural
heritage, regardless of its use value, constructive and aesthetic, represents 70% of the total cost
(including design, creation and construction). Gains, limitations in operating losses and significant
savings are possible for all players in the management and subcontracting chain of this asset. The UBIK
project aims to develop a human and digital services solution that will make it possible to efficiently
manage the life cycle of a building and thus generate short-term savings of around 15% of the
operating cost over 5 to 10 years. More generally, the objective is to open up new markets in the
archival field and asset management, taking advantage of the opportunities offered by the digital
transition through a new approach dedicated to architectural professions.

The UBIK project, led by the architecture agency HAHA, aims to develop a holistic solution allowing this
management in time and space of an architectural heritage in two phases. Phase 1 presented to the
AMI Economie Numérique focuses on the workflow of digitizing a built heritage (buildings of the
Banque Populaire Alsace-Lorraine-Champagne) which will integrate a certain number of data (surfaces,
volumes, equipment, materials, various characteristics) with a level of detail according to the needs of
the owner. The project will create BIM digital models that allow targeted data searches through a
powerful new business query engine, operation traceability, job planning and drastic savings in
operating and maintenance costs. The interoperability of digital services will be developed through
structuring and delivery in the cloud.

Objectives of the post-doctoral fellowship:
This post-doctoral fellowship has two main objectives:
For several years, CRAN has been interested in the 3D digitization of buildings based on a laser
scanning approach. The various works and projects carried out in recent years (thesis of A. Bennis,
Maturation project, ADEME ITE+ project) have led to a successful software prototype called
MODIBUILDING to reconstruct the IFC 3D model of a building from its point cloud. One of the
particularities of MODIBUILDING is to use fully automated reconstruction algorithms, using the same
precision parameter whatever the surface of the model. However, the computing times needed for
reconstruction are directly related to the level of detail required for the model. Within the framework
of this project, it will therefore be considered to test the MODIBUILDING solution on new practical
cases and to specify new processing algorithms able to integrate a variable level of precision according
to the considered surfaces or to propose other alternatives than a complete automation of the
A second objective is to study the ontologies resulting from the work on BIM 4D. BIM 4D is a modeling
approach that combines geometry and time. This type of modeling then makes it possible to capitalize
on the shape, space or time operations taking place on the building. The IFC4 standard proposes a first
formalization of BIM4D in the form of activities associated with the various elements that can be
grouped together in the form of a schedule. The model thus defined will make it possible to trace the
various construction, maintenance and other operations applied to the building. This BIM 4D model
can then be used to support work planning algorithms at two levels: the first level (macro or tactical
level) will make it possible to plan interventions on all buildings in the medium term and the second
level (micro or operational level) will make it possible to plan the short-term implementation of
projects relating to an intervention (renovation, extension or insulation work from the outside).

Required profile:
With a background in industrial engineering or architecture, you will have knowledge in 3D modeling
(Revit, AutoCAD,...), BIM (Graphisoft, IFC standard), data modeling (Express, UML, Protégée,...).
